To those that still follow my blog, I appreciate you holding on with the expectation that I might be able to continue writing with any regularity. To be frank, I just don't have any time I can devote to it and in my opinion I really don't have anything else to say that I haven't already. I barely have enough free time to spend with my wife, running or any of my hobbies, let alone sit down and type about it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I thank you all for the support and the interest in my struggles and triumphs in my running and weight loss journey. I still hang out on Facebook and Instagram, so feel free to hit me up on either of those if you feel like connecting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, to anyone who comes across this blog in your search for help or inspiration in your weight loss journey, I hope that even though I no longer provide updates on my current situation what I have written here will help you when you may need it most. Lastly, please remember that it takes time and determination. If you asked me the day that I took my first strides on that track that I would have run multiple marathons I would have told you you are fucking crazy. Everyday of my journey was a different challenge and while I gave in to temptation once and awhile, I didn't let it ruin all the other days. Remember Only the Strong Survive! So be strong and take it day by day!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
God Bless</div>

With the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon only a couple of months away I thought it would be a good idea to share with you some of the great charities that benefit from this awesome event. The best way to help is always to volunteer your time, but when you don't have enough of that to donate the next best thing is a monetary donation. Below is a short description of all the charities, just click on the description to be taken to their donation page. If you only have one dollar available to donate, that is a dollar more than they had yesterday. </div>

2017 was a long stress filled year with A LOT of changes in my life. I received a promotion at work the led to relocating to a new city. With that came the stress of finding a place to rent that would accept 3 dogs, selling the house, barely seeing my wife and moving all of our shit to our temporary home. On top of that putting in long hours at shop, sometimes being there till one in the morning, all while training for and running three marathons. The hardest part for me really was my eating habits. There were days and weeks where fast food was my only nutrition choices and despite training for three marathons, my weight has crept up almost 20 fucking pounds and I am not happy about it. <br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first marathon was the MercyHealth Glass City Marathon that was my first full marathon after my hip surgery, so I had no agenda and just went out and ran it for the fun of it. That also led me to be interviewed by Matt Fitzgerld for a book he is working on. </div>

While training, I cut across the yard at our apartment complex and managed to find a rut and twist my ankle with just about a month till race day. I put myself on crutches for a few days, iced it and even drove two and a half hours to Toledo to have my physical therapist take a look. Race day I had a plan of what I wanted do that I threw out the window after going out way too fast in the first mile. I felt like I could do a sub 4 hour marathon again even though I really wasn't ready prepared for it and managed to blow myself up around mile 18. I did a ton of walking with some running mixed in to grind it out through it to a 4:23:33 finish. I totally learned a lesson, the hard way, on race nutrition and pacing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The third was the Savannah Rock n Roll Marathon while I was visiting my parents. This time I followed my nutrition and pacing plan, which led to a 4:23:40 finish. Despite finishing seven seconds slower, I felt great throughout the entire race only to be slowed way down in the last two miles because of the scorching sun and heat I had to deal with. Don't get me wrong, I was tired, but because I paced properly I was able to walk the mile and a half to the car and run the 5K and 1 mile remix challenge races the next day.<br />

Add to the mix that we offered to host Christmas for my family a month later, so we had to paint, move in, organize everything, decorate, clean the townhouse and prep for what turned out to be a wonderful family Christmas. all while we both work full time jobs. We managed to get it done and had a wonderful time with my family for Christmas.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The casualty in all this since I got back from Georgia was my running and strength training. When people say they don't have time to workout, it usually is a bullshit excuse, I know I used to say it myself when I was 300 pounds, however this time it was true. All that moving and long hours my body just wasn't having it and what little free time I had was used to rest my sore body. November 5th was the last day I ran until I hopped on the treadmill December 9th. Since then it has been like pulling teeth to get me to go running, and that has me worried considering my spring marathon training started this week.<br />
<br />
During all this time I was blogging less and less, which I am sure any
of my long time readers noticed. As you read earlier, I really just
didn't have the time, however I was also feeling like my posts were
getting redundant and boring, so I decided to just take a break from
it.<br />
<br />
Now that my time has started to loosen up some I
decided I wanted to try getting back into it, but I felt I really needed
a change and what better way than a little re-branding. I wanted a
title that was much shorter and that was still running related, but
wasn't completely about weight loss. Don't get me wrong I will still
continue to write about my struggles with my weight, but I wanted
something that fit more of me and my personality. I came up with a few
ideas, but most of them were garbage or were already taken in one of the
social media venues, and after a couple of weeks it finally hit me The
Tatted Runner. I mean I love to run and I love getting and looking at
tattoos so the name seemed to just fit. I know their are other runners out there currently with more tattoos, and I don't claim to be the guy with "the most tattoos" or even the "coolest" tattoos, but tattoos have been a love of mine since I was in grade school drawing on myself with permanent markers. So with this change I feel like I
don't have to concentrate on just running and weight loss, even though I
will continue to write about both. <br />
<br />
That was my quick year in review and I look forward to a great 2018 in a lot of areas of my life. I turn the BIG 40 this year and I have something I am working on that I personally think will be a fun challenge and great way to celebrate 40 years on this planet!<br />

You only have today and tomorrow to save some serious coin if you want to run one of the MercyHealth Glass City Marathon weekend events. Choose from the Glass City 5K, the 10th anniversary Owens Corning Half Marathon, the Yark Subaru 5 Person Marathon Relay, or join me and run the MercyHealth Glass City Marathon. This race weekend is a blast and caters to the first timer all the way to the Boston qualifiers and everyone in between. This will be my 6th straight year participating in one of the events and I keep coming back because of the big city race feel with a small hometown feel. </div>

<b><span style="font-size: x-large;">The Tatted Runner </span></b></div>
<br />
I have thought long and hard (#) about this and I have come to the conclusion that my time as Running in the Fat Lane, has come to an end. It is a bitter sweet feeling because it has been such a big part of my life the last 2-3 years, but I have decided to close this chapter of my life and look towards the future. I was looking for a new moniker that easily expressed who I am in as few words as possible. I have tattoos, I plan on getting quite a lot more and I run, so it was a no brainier. To be honest, I was really surprised that The Tatted Runner was available in all social media aspects. <br />
<br />
I am not sure yet what or how this blog will change, I may get more active then I've been or I might just post as I feel like it, but either way, it has been a great sharing my weight loss struggles and triumphs with you all.<br />

I am two weeks in with my journey back to 173 pounds and I am doing pretty well so far. I have managed to stay on track for 12 of the first 14 days. Thursday I a day trip to Indianapolis for a work meeting where they provided lunch, and I dug in a little more than I should have. They served chicken, roast beef, red skin mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. I left the steam veggies off the plate and went back for seconds on the rest.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday for Mother's Day, Mandy and I ended up at the Melt Bar & Grill, which originated in Cleveland, Ohio and has spread like wild fire around the state. Basically they are known for making some tasty huge grilled cheese sandwiches with all kinds of cheese and various other ingredients. I ended up getting the Parma, Italy which was a fried chicken parmesan with marinara, garlic texas toast, mozzarella and parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. I was a bit of a good boy, I only got a half a sandwich, but it still was a calorie filled lunch. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhiqt6mp4tgiwdZqB1bR_chP9HLo05A3OWvF5HBfSrx3mvYgc8PgGp3m3DLywun9JV3_xbsW678wo9c7s2Ay3jm3D_oEmAhG-UvFCf08IhwAcV88XYHS8qtz3WYc9slXxj_sBBnyAcd2g/s1600/IMG_5453.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhiqt6mp4tgiwdZqB1bR_chP9HLo05A3OWvF5HBfSrx3mvYgc8PgGp3m3DLywun9JV3_xbsW678wo9c7s2Ay3jm3D_oEmAhG-UvFCf08IhwAcV88XYHS8qtz3WYc9slXxj_sBBnyAcd2g/s200/IMG_5453.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgabTmGoPH22IbquYxdRXoxEKgbkik20XG8RD6ZnVRYma7TCNXRv4eE_o-BsaBNQT-yQYkOQkERhDVuo5PBCFI7JPFPXOcI8v1w9PC4_PAI-XO3hdy-9rji12fPljdtK7yQs-u7clEvLg/s1600/FullSizeRender_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgabTmGoPH22IbquYxdRXoxEKgbkik20XG8RD6ZnVRYma7TCNXRv4eE_o-BsaBNQT-yQYkOQkERhDVuo5PBCFI7JPFPXOcI8v1w9PC4_PAI-XO3hdy-9rji12fPljdtK7yQs-u7clEvLg/s200/FullSizeRender_3.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Later in the evening when dinner time rolled around, I made things even worse when we made homemade tacos and nachos. I could have been a good boy and had one or two tacos and that was it, but I ended up having two plates of nachos and two tacos. I basically killed almost a whole bag of shredded cheese on my own. Sad I know!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As a reminder here is my starting point</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is my weeks one and two weigh in photos. To be honest I was a little shocked and how much change happened in these two weeks, but I am not going to complain one bit. I just hope its body fat that is leaving and no muscle mass.</div>

Well today is a new day and I am back on the horse. Long run pace is on tap for today with an estimated distance of 8 to 10 miles. I'll let how I am feeling determine that once I get out there. </div>

I know I keep saying I am going to write more then I don't do anything about it. Well this time I had a pretty damn good excuse. Just over two months ago I received a promotion at work that required me to relocate to Columbus, Ohio. While the move is only a little more than two hours from my previous location, the last couple months have been crazy trying to get the house ready to sell, find an apartment, move stuff down and start my new job.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim1Uo-ex01TShO6g2I4XrG1f6HuS1Km9S-1G2IsOGYpdCu1oOA4ZpYYS8dUVr1dettzza1IQ8FMCfoQw3AV2ROqdU1TA96tk8otHP2YduN7uiblrw637mR6gxm7CP56gHDVi3SRMNWDsQ/s1600/FullSizeRender%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim1Uo-ex01TShO6g2I4XrG1f6HuS1Km9S-1G2IsOGYpdCu1oOA4ZpYYS8dUVr1dettzza1IQ8FMCfoQw3AV2ROqdU1TA96tk8otHP2YduN7uiblrw637mR6gxm7CP56gHDVi3SRMNWDsQ/s200/FullSizeRender%25282%2529.jpg" width="200" /></a> First the job, as I have stated before in my blog, I work for a Harley-Davidson dealership and the people I work for have added a third dealership to their group and promoted me to manage the entire store and run the day to day operations. It was something I have been working towards for a long time and Mandy and I were psyched when we got the news that it was in Columbus. There is a ton to do there and I already know a couple people that live down there, so it made the decision pretty easy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once we had an idea this was going to happen we kicked things into high gear to get the house ready to sell. Painting, cleaning, fixing some minor things and finding a realtor. Then I had to drive around Columbus looking for a place to live. This was no easy feet, as Mandy and I are not ready to buy another house and trying to find a apartment complex that will allow 3 dogs proved to be a challenge. Thanks to one of my good friends that lives in Columbus, he new someone that manages a complex that bent the rules for us. For at least the next year our home will be a two bedroom town house that we got with a garage so we had room for storage. It was pretty damn hard to fit a three bedroom 1.5 bathroom house and a three car garage worth of stuff that has accumulated over 14 years into a 2 bedroom 1.5 bath townhouse with a tiny single car garage. We did have to get a pretty good sized roll away dumpster and clear out a lot of shit, but in the end we managed to do it.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The biggest challenge for us now is not having a fenced in back yard for the dogs. We have to harness them up every time they need to go outside. What use to take us just a couple minutes to let them out on their own, now requires a solid 10-15 minutes.<br />
<br />
Once we get a our house sold, we can concentrate on finding or new home, but until then we are making due with what we got. <br />

I have had plenty change in my life lately, but one of which I am not to happy with at all. I have been avoiding the scale mostly because I couldn't face to see how far I had fallen in recent months. It has been easier and easier for me to give into temptation, combined with the lack of any continuity in my daily routine and not having any portion control. While most if not all would look at me in my current state and not see a fat person, inside that is what I feel like. I just don't feel comfortable in my body right now and after seeing my group photo with all my co-ambassadors for the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon I realized I just wasn't happy with myself anymore.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

With the thought that no matter what it is going to say I have to do something and reverse my course. As you can see below I have allowed a little over 14 pounds of my history to creep back into my life. So how do I fix it? Go with what you know works. I looked back at my food journal from a couple years ago and made changes to my current grocery list and I've refocused my efforts to measure out and log everything I put in my mouth. Goal weight of 173 here we come! </div>

As I headed out the door for the 41st running of the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon I was both nervous and excited that race day was finally here. I was excited because it was finally time to start, run and finish the 26.2 miles of this race. I was nervous because I was going into it with minimal amounts of training and another round of IT Band issues, which was the reason I had to back out of this race the first time. I knew the pain would set in, I just wasn't sure when, and what I was going to do when it did.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOv7MZKH2p5Kbs7rs9syUMXwaUfystJXZA74HZhFNYqtKrK3yAnJOYc2JRijFx3y4-2dVeeloBo73OcsNkiQUdNcUmBaLfG7Mcxs3jC6qPHHT6L3aY0EQ9Pm0hf-hGD0mqCKaPEJdlJK4/s1600/FullSizeRender%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOv7MZKH2p5Kbs7rs9syUMXwaUfystJXZA74HZhFNYqtKrK3yAnJOYc2JRijFx3y4-2dVeeloBo73OcsNkiQUdNcUmBaLfG7Mcxs3jC6qPHHT6L3aY0EQ9Pm0hf-hGD0mqCKaPEJdlJK4/s320/FullSizeRender%25281%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The weather was picture perfect, and other than being just a little to chilly while waiting in the corrals for the gun to go off, almost no wind and clear skies as the sun came up made for a beautiful start. I told myself over and over as I made my way across the starting line to run my own race and don't let others control my pace. I knew that if I went out to fast I was going to be in big trouble so I treated this like it was just another long run, I picked a pace and stuck to it no matter what was going on around me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBDgMKviCvXf3lUN1clk0GLen5PmP3cRWnyCMYDOQuwV5hyphenhyphenPHp1acgpMiLzE82bpA8VxHtjuHZRp5AdPbLZ1PvhS8yI0sJvYwd4f-SuGo46eR5D4lTjfDrbHgAhXJyWr2XYwoCf2wZxX0/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBDgMKviCvXf3lUN1clk0GLen5PmP3cRWnyCMYDOQuwV5hyphenhyphenPHp1acgpMiLzE82bpA8VxHtjuHZRp5AdPbLZ1PvhS8yI0sJvYwd4f-SuGo46eR5D4lTjfDrbHgAhXJyWr2XYwoCf2wZxX0/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Things were going pretty darn well up through mile thirteen until I got greedy. I was feeling really good at that point with my pace sitting right around a 10:00 mile average. I started to let thoughts of speeding up and letting my potential finishing time cloud my judgment. BIG MISTAKE. I started to push the pace by almost a minute and it took no more than a mile to aggravate my IT Band. It was at that time I had to come back to reality and slow things back down. This is also when the walk breaks entered the conversation as well. Walking usually calms the pain down in my knee so once the pain subsided I returned to a 10-10:30 avg pace. I was able to grind out a mile or so before I would have to walk it out for a couple of minutes, and this strategy got me through the next few miles. <br />

Brian is a firefighter in Sandusky, Ohio who runs almost every race in full firefighter gear. He originally started competing in endurance events because he was 50 pounds overweight and at risk for heart disease. He found performing the basic fire ground operations became exhausting and
difficult, so he knew he had to make a change. Did you know that 40%-50% of all
In-The-Line-Duty deaths on the fire ground are related to heart attacks
and strokes, I never would have thought that with all the other dangers they encounter. Brian is now in the best shape of his life and runs almost every race in full gear to bring awareness to firefighter health and to raise money for the <a href="https://www.firemanrobfoundation.com/" target="_blank">Fireman Rob Foundation </a>. I hung with Brian for the next couple of miles as we both would push each other to run just a little more. It was just what we both needed to get us through and finish at our own pace. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So at mile 22 I pushed on at a 11 minute mile pace trying to finish this race without walking anymore, unfortunately that was a pipe dream. By the time I started mile 26 I had only taken a couple of short walk breaks and was getting pretty tired, but I was so close I could taste it. I switched up my playlist to a group of songs that would get the adrenaline flowing and push me to the end. The unfortunate byproduct is I always end up cranking up the pace as well and with just over a half mile to the finish my IT band let me know just who was boss at that point. Walking wasn't even an option I needed to just stop because it felt like I couldn't even bend my knee it was so tight. I tried a couple of stretches to loosen things up, but wasn't much help. About another minute went by when a gentleman I had passed earlier came up and stopped his race to check on me. I was leaned over trying to massage my IT band and all he said was "come on, lets go get our medals". I looked up at him, smiled and we started to jog it out together. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjKfUYcI_g0mTvzhtFmG107rjUD8ek5B0Ebv0y20Kq4hNE9C4JZZp1fYmKd4aJeee3qdl9vgrMt91EbdyTHqJq5Xu6kWEu4qoAvp_HvwF-dHrH629ToviJxUZTg9b7UdBrAtKKn13CXMQ/s1600/FullSizeRender11111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjKfUYcI_g0mTvzhtFmG107rjUD8ek5B0Ebv0y20Kq4hNE9C4JZZp1fYmKd4aJeee3qdl9vgrMt91EbdyTHqJq5Xu6kWEu4qoAvp_HvwF-dHrH629ToviJxUZTg9b7UdBrAtKKn13CXMQ/s320/FullSizeRender11111.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last 50 yards was amazing. Running down the finishers shoot lined with people cheering for people they don't even know like they have known me for years is a incredible feeling and a humbling experience. I crossed the finish line where the race director, who I've known for years and years, was there congratulating all the finishers gave me a hug and a high five. I ended up with a finishing time of 4:43:40, which is right about what I was thinking before the race began. After I received my medal I almost wanted to think that all of the shit I've gone through that kept me from this race until now was because this year's medal was so f-ing badass compared to years past. The medal was huge and featured some great Toledo imagery showing inside the overall shape of the state of Ohio. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0a5VyqWgzTyT8iRlXs6hdYpsN43jKgwvwy5XPwgxf5Aib2tGWF5cOWzmGFiSAKeVRduKuT5Pg2APQxyLF-yRfYV0StyXXGQGc0mzETQ2OvTZxgkoVwr0SUl7L5Alv-kRYbCTe1VCj6AM/s1600/IMG_5239%25281%2529mnmn.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0a5VyqWgzTyT8iRlXs6hdYpsN43jKgwvwy5XPwgxf5Aib2tGWF5cOWzmGFiSAKeVRduKuT5Pg2APQxyLF-yRfYV0StyXXGQGc0mzETQ2OvTZxgkoVwr0SUl7L5Alv-kRYbCTe1VCj6AM/s320/IMG_5239%25281%2529mnmn.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I felt like I had my feet under me again my parents and I headed down to the after party to get my free commemorative beer mug and a little post race chow. The live entertainment on stage was a band that is fronted by one of my long time friends from high school who I was also in a band with. Between songs he started picking a few notes from one of our old original songs then he asked if I wanted to hop on stage for old time sake and hit the skins. It was a blast to get back behind a drum kit again even if I was tired from running a marathon. lol :)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzCRoQ_vwC1p-ZHiSEKCIhZVBQwlxTIdP4g2frPPYgUxYTN4hqvMw2c2ClEm8csASvRs0BnlEpEJKl-ac0T2aq5ov7pnohKglPAUdeUB7YjxVhc-GDX4TI-ZgTmOCG4j_BISme_-Uo-lU/s1600/FullSizeRender%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzCRoQ_vwC1p-ZHiSEKCIhZVBQwlxTIdP4g2frPPYgUxYTN4hqvMw2c2ClEm8csASvRs0BnlEpEJKl-ac0T2aq5ov7pnohKglPAUdeUB7YjxVhc-GDX4TI-ZgTmOCG4j_BISme_-Uo-lU/s320/FullSizeRender%25282%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the end, I would have to say other than a few minor little things I would change about the race, you would be hard pressed to find a fault with this race. The race director, the race board that makes all the decisions, the Toledo Roadrunners club, the police and fire and the hundreds and hundreds of volunteers did an amazing job. The Mercy Health Glass City Marathon may be just a small hometown event compared to a Columbus, Chicago or Detroit, but man this crew treats it like it is one of the marathon majors. Every year they seem to make it bigger and better without losing that hometown intimate feel. Oh and if you are looking for a great race to qualify for Boston, this is it. A little over 22% of this year's finishers qualified and so could you.</div>

I am sooooo psyched about this year's finisher medals for the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon. While I was bummed I wasn't able to earn the marathon medal last year for the 40th anniversary I don't like it as much as I do compared to this year's medal. If I have to crawl through the finish line to get one I will!!!!!!</div>

Today marks 16 weeks till the <a href="http://glasscitymarathon.org/">Mercy Health Glass City Marathon</a>.
If you haven't started your marathon training yet, you probably should
look to start NOW. Looking for that right plan to follow, well I can
say with 100 percent certainty that there is no one plan that works for
everyone. Whether you are a first time marathoner or this is your 100th
time toeing the line, everyone requires a different way of doing it.
Having said that, at the end of the day it is all about getting enough
miles in that your body will be prepared for the stress a marathon can
put on you. Assuming everything goes well, I will finally be running the <a href="http://glasscitymarathon.org/">Mercy Health Glass City Marathon</a> this year. For my training plan, I am literally starting today, which is a couple weeks behind where I wanted to be. It was my fault as this year I am using a modified Hal Higdon intermediate #2 plan for the mileage, but I am using a customized heart rate training program from Alisha at <a href="http://www.toledophysicaltherapy.com/">Elite Physical Therapy</a> to handle my pace zones. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG8riIDL3NOOtb06478O6ueHR2M5mPAiKj0O1LBDX7AHJHJN4szrmpTyFKVYhWE__JWSUbJCxLnYoxsYj8S_Xf2gHildfk7TgRBZq5y8mVBRjWXAd8ayfCbByTdLvtbhaPcl9PEWKJwlw/s1600/IMG_3071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG8riIDL3NOOtb06478O6ueHR2M5mPAiKj0O1LBDX7AHJHJN4szrmpTyFKVYhWE__JWSUbJCxLnYoxsYj8S_Xf2gHildfk7TgRBZq5y8mVBRjWXAd8ayfCbByTdLvtbhaPcl9PEWKJwlw/s200/IMG_3071.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwgl00VMmBZk2A-HadV8IoPcdhvKqePeIyX6AmrNnNJ1XnmgtpqHIFWezsdQ6Nu7MIZDY_zNchL3AUgf9GRHuhfO0fqbvpfePb9IRl27nUAn_4lptk3g1fSCC1Ee0CYuDRVCt2-ixUaUQ/s1600/first-timer-perks-v2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwgl00VMmBZk2A-HadV8IoPcdhvKqePeIyX6AmrNnNJ1XnmgtpqHIFWezsdQ6Nu7MIZDY_zNchL3AUgf9GRHuhfO0fqbvpfePb9IRl27nUAn_4lptk3g1fSCC1Ee0CYuDRVCt2-ixUaUQ/s200/first-timer-perks-v2.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First, as I said before, if you are taking on the <a href="http://glasscitymarathon.org/">Mercy Health Glass City Marathon</a> you should be starting now. This year the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon staff are offering perks for those that choose this race for their first marathon experience. So if you are thinking of going after 26.2 then this is the place and the year to do it. If you don't have a plan to follow, here is a few of the more popular ones out there.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.halhigdon.com/training/">Hal Higdon</a> - arguably
the most popular plan out there. He offers plans for the complete
novice to the most advanced runners out there. I used a slightly
modified version of his intermediate plan when I trained for my first
marathon and I am using a modified version of his intermediate #2 plan for this year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.jeffgalloway.com/">Jeff Galloway Training</a>
- To be honest I am not familiar with his plan and never used it
myself, but I have heard his name mentioned quite a lot when it came to
training plans for beginners so I thought I would list it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/143.shtml">CoolRunnings.com</a> - Just another free online program to look at.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.hansons-running.com/training-plans/">Hansons Marathon Method</a>
- This is a strategy that I would only recommend to someone who has at
least one if not two marathons under their belt and has been running for
some time. I purchased their book and read it cover to cover and was
fascinated by their approach. They buck the trend of conventional
wisdom when it comes to the long run we have heard so much about. To be
honest, I have yet to try this method, but I want to attempt it at some
point. The link is to their free basic plan, but I want to caution
you, if you want to do their plan, read the book!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For those of you taking on the Owens Corning GCM Half Marathon or the
Medical Mutual 5K, your training will start soon, so get out there now
and get a few miles under your belt in preparation for your training. Most of the training programs I have listed have half marathon plans and a couple have 5k plans, but any of these plans can be modified for your specific situation.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The holidays are over and all my excuses are used up so it's time to get off my ass and reverse the trend. I had fallen off the maintain wagon a few months back, but surprising I have been maintaining my weight almost the entire time. It started with forgetting to track every thing I ate, followed by larger portions at meals, followed by more and more "cheat days" and then the holidays. It started with one cookie here and a chocolate treat there, till I was in all out binge at every chance I got using the excuse "its the holidays"over and over. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

When I finally got the guts to do it, I was shocked it wasn't worse than it turned out to be. I was only three pounds away from getting back into my acceptable 10 pound range. Now, the goal isn't to just lose those 3 pounds, its to get back to my goal weight and then some. My goal is 170 pounds which means I am working towards a 13 pound loss. My plan moving forwards is to decide on what my caloric intake should be, track everything I stuff my face with and stick to my workout routine. So look for the return of Wednesday Weigh In as soon as next week!</div>

Running in place is exactly how I feel right now in life and literally with the new addition to my training arsenal. First just to get it out of the way, I feel this way because I have some big changes that are on the horizon for Mandy and myself, but I cannot say anything or move forward till a few things happen that are out of my control. I am not a fan of feeling like I don't have control of my situation, but I'll just sit on top of this rocket and wait for the launch button to be pressed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now to the real reason for this post. I have been stressing about my training for the <a href="http://glasscitymarathon.org/">Mercy Health Glass City Marathon</a> and how I am gonna get it done. I'll admit it, I don't like running when its cold, but I am more than willing to do it if I have to. Due to my life and work schedule the best time for me to run is very early in the morning, and running in the dark when its cold with ice and snow worries me. Sense I don't want to risk a slip and fall injury and the last time I ran on the banked corner track at the gym I had major IT Band issues, so I was left with one option, a treadmill. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my search for the perfect treadmill I asked for suggestion on Facebook and Instagram, while I got a couple credible suggestions I still had to do a bunch of my own research. I really didn't want to spend more than $700 on one, however during my research I found that that price only works if you want to walk or lightly jog. The more I read it looked like $1200 would be the low end to get what I was looking for. I wanted a mill that had a wide and long running surface, quick access to incline and speed controls and a super quiet motor. While there were three that fit the bill with really high customer and critic ratings, I eventually decided to go with the Sole F80 for all the reasons I listed, the availability and sale price.<br />

I have been very impressed with it to this point. It is whisper quiet and the built in speakers work nicely while watching Netflix on my iPad. I woke up to mild temperatures and wet conditions from the rain that fell overnight. Once I got dressed and ate a little breakfast I made my way downtown to get a decent parking spot and meet my fellow Mercy Health Glass City Marathon Ambassadors for a group picture. I had to laugh when Jen, a fellow ambassador showed up in the turkey costume because I had no idea she was the turkey for everyone to chase. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After our group picture we all were talking about what times we were trying to hit, I really hadn't thought about it because it was my long run day, so my plan was to run the race and then go run another 7 miles when I got home. I wished everyone luck and took off to do a little warm up jog. This is when I noticed that I had forgot my earbuds. I absolutely hate running without music, but this time I had no choice. When I got done, our conversation about what time we all were trying for was bugging me so I looked up my 5k PR and remembered that was the day I won the <a href="http://www.runninginthefatlane.com/2015/04/hell-of-3rd-run-aversary.html">Run the Res 5k</a> last year. I finished that race in 22:20 and after a little waffling I figured what the hell I'll give it a shot to try and beat it. I made my way to the front of the pack to ensure I could get a good start with a few minutes before the start. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once the horn sounded I went out like I was shot out of a cannon and feeling pretty good. Now the weather never was a factor, but there was so much moisture in the air that it was misting the entire run. The mist made it difficult to see as it built up on my glasses and the roads got slippery where they used tar to patch up the cracks. When I hit the mile and a half mark, my breathing became a little labored and I noticed my heart rate was pegged close to my max. I thought about shutting it down, but decided to keep going till I couldn't breath anymore.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi35hSYMtGmkZumodLUdZZQR96qTxnnoebJyeE3VLqPHgulS2r7gH4ckLVM1zNg2vRxMCaWNcoFBPm8nsfrbZ-VMZUBkahWR6LNLXLpHG8JaU2ubbh51nby5AAMPv0RtVjo1TTbqtuJBGE/s1600/FullSizeRender_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi35hSYMtGmkZumodLUdZZQR96qTxnnoebJyeE3VLqPHgulS2r7gH4ckLVM1zNg2vRxMCaWNcoFBPm8nsfrbZ-VMZUBkahWR6LNLXLpHG8JaU2ubbh51nby5AAMPv0RtVjo1TTbqtuJBGE/s200/FullSizeRender_5.jpg" width="200" /></a> Coming down to the final stretch my breathing, even though was labored, had stayed pretty even. I used the short downhill to help my legs kick into one more gear for the remaining tenth of a mile. To be honest when I crossed the finish line I had no idea if I PRd this thing, but I didn't care, all I wanted to do is catch my breathe. Now that I was breathing easier, I took a look and was stunned that I PRd by 20 seconds, which was made official later in the day when the official results were published.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I set that PR last year, I felt like I was in really good running shape vs now when I am 10 pounds over my goal weight and still coming back from my hip surgery. Needless to say I was proud of myself, but knew I still had some work to do with my conditioning. After I got home, I hit the road for the rest of the miles I wanted to get in, but I cut it down to five due to how hard I pushed running the other three.</div>

Just as the title implies, I decided to take the plunge and see what all the fuss is about with this brand of shoe with the funny name. For the last couple of years I have jumped on the Altra shoe bandwagon and was hooked. I loved the whole premise of the shoes, with the larger foot shaped toe box, zero drop natural foot position and the cushioning options available. Altra shoes have been a rock star for off road trail runners and has been picking up steam on the road scene, but no where as fast has Hoka One One. I figured if I was going to jump ship and join the Hoka camp, now would be a good time since I am not officially training for a race for another couple of months.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hoka One One is known for its tall soles with a plush ride that can, at times, feel like you are running on a bed of marshmallows in a light weight package. There are several models to choose from, and after a little research I decided to give the new Clifton 3s a try. I headed over to one of my local running stores to try them on. In my research, one of the big complaints about the Clifton 2s was how narrow they felt, but all the 3s reviews were saying they rectified the problem, so I figured I was good to go. I slipped on the shoes and right away they felt tight, especially on the outside edge of my feet. I tried going up a half size, which helped, but they still felt more snug then my Altras. In full disclosure, I have short wide feet and usually require a shoe that come in wide widths, however this was not the case for my Altras. At the time of this write up I did not see any wide width options from Hoka, but I could have missed it on their website. I hopped on the treadmill and right away I was hooked! I loved the feel and the cushioning was so absorbent, it truly felt like I was running on a bed of marshmallows. With a thirty day money back guarantee I figured they were totally worth the time to put some miles on them.</div>

Why you ask? Well for me its the fit that concerns me. I really think it is just a matter of the width of my foot and the lack of width in the shoe, because if this shoe came in a wide version, I would be keeping it. I was noticing that the top of the toe box would rub the top of my two outer toes with every stride. With the longest single run of 6.2 miles in these shoes, the rubbing never became an issue, but I am envisioning what will happen when I am out for a 20 mile long run. I really want to minimize any issues during my marathon training and the potential for blisters or worse can be controlled with the right fitting shoes. I decided to give my Altras a quick try again, just to be sure I wasn't over reacting, and while there was a slight touch, it was nowhere near as bad as it was with the Hokas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So in conclusion, if they offered this shoe in a wide and it fit with no toe box rubbing, I would make the switch, I loved them that much. I didn't feel like the shoe was to tall, and while the super soft ride felt great, I never felt like I was sacrificing performance. At the end of the day, you need to be comfortable in your shoes regardless of brand or style. Even thought things didn't work out with the Clifton 3s, I'll keep my eye on Hoka, and maybe down the road they will accommodate those of us with wide feet, but until then, I'll stick with my Altras. </div>

By the time the race started it was in the high 40's to low 50's, clear skies and virtually no wind at all. The race was scheduled to start at 9:00am so I made sure I was there about 45 minutes prior to the start so I could get warmed up and check the place out. McQueen's Orchard has been a staple for the Toledo area for more than 55 years, and plays host to many of fun family events throughout the year. To be honest I couldn't tell you how many years they have been hosting this event, but it felt like they had been doing this for years.</div>

I found several of my fellow Mercy Health Glass City Marathon Ambassadors prepping for the race near the start line. We got together for a few pictures and to talk about what our goals were for the race. I finally got to meet Brian, the only other male ambassador this year. Brian is a firefighter in the Sandusky area and is quite well known because every run he does in full firefighter gear to bring awareness for his fallen brothers and passes out stuffed animals to the young spectators along the course. He has run almost 60 races including several marathons as well.</div>

I was planning on hanging with a local running coach, Chris Peiffer who I hadn't met till today, but we follow each other on Instagram. He was pacing a few people for this run as they were using it as a training run for another race. They were going to run a 9:45ish pace, however they were feeling pretty good and made the game day decision to push their pace by about 30 or so seconds. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaESBUMG6oL6S2oPIpw0gfj0zW8QQb5gQaujWa6EMJ68AdeKp2UtFKVJl7gmNyefiXMHNJL3CvDutNOnu9EMCLx0AEhfSEQ1XSqQuxKtIiik2yd7zedJgGzOH4rSzQzGjulMt-33g574I/s1600/14559949_10154374836506154_9138006782362098526_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaESBUMG6oL6S2oPIpw0gfj0zW8QQb5gQaujWa6EMJ68AdeKp2UtFKVJl7gmNyefiXMHNJL3CvDutNOnu9EMCLx0AEhfSEQ1XSqQuxKtIiik2yd7zedJgGzOH4rSzQzGjulMt-33g574I/s320/14559949_10154374836506154_9138006782362098526_o.jpg" width="146" /></a> If I had a complaint about this race, the only one would be how small the starting coral was. We were packed in so tight and for the first few hundred yards there wasn't much room to spread out. It took me almost a mile and a half before I caught up to Chris and his group, where I just hung out till we hit the last 1.2 miles. I was feeling really really good and felt like I could push myself harder, so I slowly started to kick it out and pulled away from the group. I went from a 8:56 pace in mile five to an 8:21 pace for mile six and was able to finish officially with a time of 55:59 @ 9:01 pace. I knew at the time that I had PRd my 10k time since the last time I ran a 10k I was well over 200 pounds. Based on my Garmin Connect account, today's race was 12.5 minutes faster than my previous PR. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As far as the race course goes, it was a very flat race on country roads and neighborhoods. I was a little worried when we hit the end of mile three and made a right turn back where we started from. I was thinking we were going to run the exact same route we just did, however this was only the case for a mile where we turned off the original route and started through some of the nicer neighborhoods in the area. We made several left and right turns before getting back on the original route for the last half mile to the finish. At the end we were treated to cold water, fresh picked apples, apple cider, power bars and fresh baked sugar coated cake donuts. I grabbed a donut, a power bar and an apple to celebrate my new PR.</div>

All in all, if you are looking for a fun, flat 5k or 10k race in the fall then this race is for you. If you are one to dress up in your favorite costumes and think, "it would be fun to run dressed like this" then this race is most defiantly for you. I'll leave you with a few pictures I grabbed off of Dave's Performance Footgear's Facebook page so you can see some of the fun times from the day! </div>

<span class="_4n-j fsl"> I have heard great things about this race, but never had the opportunity to run it. This year is finally my year, so I signed up for the 10K and now, I have to decide if and if so, what costume I plan on wearing. This should get interesting, considering I really am not the costume kind of guy. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="_4n-j fsl"> For those of you that haven't heard of this race it falls one week after the annual MacQueen Orchards
Apple Butter Stir Festival, and the race is called the Run for Your
Life 10k / 5k / Kid’s Run, which is presented by NAIFA Toledo. We don't really get a lot of 10k races in our area so when that elusive area 10k is available, you take it. They encourage you to get ready for the Halloween season by coming as a family and trying out
your costumes during the run. The course starts and finishes at
MacQueen Orchards and travels through the scenic, paved Holland roads. The orchard is located at </span>7605 Garden Rd, Holland, Ohio 43528 and you can sign up for the race by clicking <a href="https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Holland/MacQueensRunforYourLife10k5kKidsRun">HERE</a> but you better hurry, because prices increase after this Friday!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I grabbed a couple of pictures from their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MacQueen-Orchards-110323812337601/">Facebook page</a> to give you all an idea of how much fun this race looks to be. Oh and I forgot to mention, donuts are waiting for you at the finish line. I did the math and if I run the 10k at a ten minute mile average I will burn roughly 840 calories. The average donut has 198-330 calories depending on type and toppings, so that means I can eat between 2 to 4 of those tasty devils. </div>

Well for most it means it's Monday or just six more days until Christmas, but for me its the start of an 18 week journey to the <a href="http://glasscitymarathon.org/">Mercy Health Glass City Marathon</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Minutes after I crossed the finish line of my first marathon I knew deep down this wouldn't be my last, its all I could think about actually. I made the decision that the <a href="http://glasscitymarathon.org/">Mercy Health Glass City Marathon</a> would be my next attempt, but due to severe IT Band pain I wasted most of my training time trying to solve it on my own instead of seeking professional help. Finally after weeks of trying different shoes, exercises and gimmicky products I listened to my friends and sought out professional help. Alisha at <a href="http://www.toledophysicaltherapy.com/">Elite Sports and Orthopedic physical therapy</a> got me fixed up and I was able to get enough training in to not only complete the GCM Owens Corning Half Marathon, but I PRd the shit out of it.</div>

Super quick back story, Rik was on a podcast talking about the documentary and about his weight loss journey and for some reason it really hit me and stoked the fire under me to get my ass moving and lose the weight. Rik and I became friends on Facebook and while I was in town we were able to get together for a run and hang out. Trust me I am getting to my point here, so anyway we were talking over dinner and he had mentioned that he has a goal of running a marathon in all 50 states and I'll be damned if he didn't do it again with the inspiration thing. I rode the motorcycle on this trip which allowed me plenty of alone time from my co workers to think and while on the way home that was all I could think about. I came to the conclusion that a long, long term goal will keep me striving to stay healthy and engaged in running, so I signed up for the Detroit Marathon to kick off my 50 in 50 journey. What better way to knock the second state off my list than go and complete the marathon of the first half marathon I ever ran. Well for those of you that continually read my ramblings that never happened. A couple weeks into my training the pain in my hip surfaced and my race hope was extinguished with the need for hip surgery. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I toe the line on April 23rd, 2017 it will be roughly two and a half years since I have attempted 26 miles 385 yards, so I pretty much consider this to be my first ever marathon all over again and the start to my 50 in 50 state marathon journey, at least that is how I am going to approach it. The plan is to just having fun at the race and taking it all in, with no pressure to finish in a certain time like I should have done the first time around.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I sit here now typing away and I realized that if I am successful the GCM will in fact be my second marathon as I always planned it, but I can't help but wonder why the detour. Was it just bad luck or did the good lord truly have a plan in place? I don't know, but what I do know is, I have 13 weeks to get myself ready for the training cycle. Starting next week, building a solid running base, strength training and trimming a little body fat are my biggest priorities for when December 19th rolls around. </div>

<br />
Well what can I say, my wife and I just can't get enough joy out of having cute little dogs running around, so without further ado, meet Mekah. She is an nine week old short haired red dapple dachshund, that so far has fit in perfectly. We have slowly transitioned away from chihuahuas into dachshund lovers, we must just love sausage parties! (#) Sorry I had to say it! </div>

She trolls this website <a href="http://hoobly.com/">hoobly.com</a> that has all kinds of stuff for sale, kind of like craigslist, but seems to be a big site for pets. She came across this listing for Mekah and we both instantly fell in love with her and there was no way I could say no. If you are wondering why we would buy a dog when there are so many great dogs that are in need of adoption, well when you are interested in a specific breed it is harder to find a one that way and believe me when the time is right we will have a rescue dog in our family.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mandy came up with the name from a short lived character of a little girl on the Walking Dead after we were re-watching all of the seasons on Netflix. This will will be the first girl dog since Buffy our Cocker Spaniel we had when I was a little kid. She is definitely a daddy's girl and is working overtime to wrap me around her little paw.<br />

I was driving to work yesterday thinking about my latest work trip to Boston when the genesis for this post hit me. Running has allowed me to experience a city more than I ever would have if I wasn't a runner. When I look at my trip to Boston as a whole, if I wasn't a runner I wouldn't have seen more than my hotel, the convention center and the couple of blocks we walked to a restaurant for dinner. I know this was a work trip and NOT a vacation so I didn't expect to spend any time "site seeing", but when you are a runner all things are possible. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A city like Boston with so much history I was able to experience some of it, when most everyone one else is still dreaming with bags of feathers beneath their heads. On day one I was able to visit the Marathon finish line and site of the bombings. While out on my run I came across a statue of Edgar Allan Poe and I even got a little lost and wound up in their section of Chinatown. Day two I ran by the Boston Tea Party museum, found a statue of Paul Revere statue and house, and ran around an area with narrow cobblestone streets just like they were back when horse and buggy was the main mode of transportation. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a fun adventure that I wouldn't have been able to do if I didn't run. With this new found freedom I was able to run in Milwaukee, Nashville, San Antonio, and Las Vegas. Running also took me to Southern California with my Ragnar team, and even though I was recovering from my hip surgery I was able to get out to see Phoenix and the surrounding area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are few tips if you plan on running in a city you are not familiar with.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Contact someone who knows - Before every trip I hop online and take a look at where my hotel is located with google maps. Then look for running shoe stores around that area and either call them or email them. I tell them when I will be in town, the hotel I am staying at and the estimated time when I would be out running and ask them if they can recommend any safe areas to run. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Plan your runs - once I get info from the locals I use google maps to look for any historic or interesting things to see while in town that may be in those safe areas that were recommended to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. If you are traveling with others and they don't run, let them know you will be out running early - having someone that would expect you at a certain time in the morning will know something is wrong if you don't show up on time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. Local Laws - check local laws if you plan on carrying anything more than your fists to protect yourself, you'll want to know. Also check about J walking and other local laws you may unknowingly break.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5. Prepare for weather - Check the weather before you leave so you can take the proper gear. While it may be sunny and 65 where you are, it could be 100 and rainy or 30 and snowy where you are going. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
6. Take your phone, ID and some cash - Of course you'll want to take pictures on your runs, but if you have an emergency you'll want to call for help. You never know when you'll need to prove who you are so take your ID and cash is a must because you never know when you could get injured and a cab could be your savior to get you back to your hotel.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are a few pictures from some of my sights while out, burning up the road. </div>
